Curer Of Scurvy

James Lind discovered the cure for scurvy. Scurvy is a disease which is caused by the deficiency of Vitamin C, resulting in weakness, spongy gums, bleeding and excessive tiredness. Lind observed thousands of cases of scurvy and the conditions on board a ship, particularly the sailor’s restricted diet that caused it. In 1753, he published “A Treatise of the Scurvy”, in which he advocated the use of lime and lemon juice and fresh vegetables. At that time more British soldiers were dying of scurvy. The soldiers and sailors followed Lind’s advice and the introduction of citrus fruit to their diet bought the eradication of scurvy.
