Evolution Of Alphabet – A

A is the first letter of the English alphabet and all European alphabets. It is derived from the Greek letter ‘alpha’. Greeks learned the art of writing from the Phoenicians, who had themselves taken the letter from the Semites’ ‘alpha’. Our printed capital A is identical with the form found on ancient Greek and Roman inscriptions. There are two small forms of the letter – the Roman ‘a’ and the italic ‘a’. Both were perfected in the late 15th century for use as type in the newly invented printing and were adopted in England in the 16th century.
